History of Snickers Chocolate:
The Snickers candy bar built upon the success of earlier peanut and chocolate products, including the Goo Goo Cluster (1913), Goldenberg’s Peanut Chews (1922), and Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups (1928).
Snickers was created in 1929 by Frank Mars and his family. It was first sold to the public the following year.
Named for the Mars’s horse, it was composed of peanut butter nougat, peanuts, and caramel encased in milk chocolate.
The nougat was made by whipping egg whites until they were light and frothy. This was stabilized by sugar syrup, which was added along with flavoring ingredients.
The caramel was made with milk, sugar, fat, and flavorings.
Snickers were hand-wrapped until 1944, but there after were machine-wrapped. Snickers quickly became the most popular candy bar in America, a position it has held ever since.
The target of its advertising was children, and Snickers was a sponsor of the Howdy Doody Show on television from 1949 until 1952.
Building upon the success, Mars, Inc. has introduced new types of Snickers: In 1984, for instance, it introduced the Snickers Ice Cream bars; it has also introduced Snickers Cruncher and Snickers Almond.
When the Center for Science in the Public Interest criticized junk food for having empty calories, consumption of many snack foods declined. Mars, Inc. responded with an advertising campaign that announced that “Snickers Really Satisfies.”
According to Snickers another advertisement, eating a Snickers bar relieves tension and helps a consumer enjoy life: “A Snickers a Day Helps You Work, Rest and Play.” The company also used creative
opportunities to promote its product.
For instance, during the first Gulf War, frozen Snickers bars were sent to the American military. On Thanksgiving Day in 1990, Snickers bars were given to every American soldier in the Middle East.
Mars, Inc., has expanded its sales of Snickers abroad, and the candy bar is now sold throughout the world.
In the United Kingdom, its name was changed to the Marathon Bar because “snickers” rhymed with knickers, a British colloquialism for women’s panties. Recently, Mars, Inc., made the decision to use uniform names throughout the world for its confections, and the name Marathon Bar was changed to Snickers.
Some customers have had such an attachment to the old name that they refuse to buy Snickers bars even though it was made in the same way as the old Marathon Bar, but in general the shift occurred without many problems.
Snickers is very popular in other countries, particularly Russia and Eastern Europe, where it has been one of the best-selling candy bars.
Snickers has remained America’s best-selling chocolate bar for almost 70 years.
