In 1937, Vernon Rudolph launched a doughnut shop, which became known as Krispy Kreme, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
He sold doughnuts to local grocery stores and to customers through a window in his small factory.
During the 1940s, Rudolph opened other outlets for his doughnuts, particularly in the Southeast.
Rudolph died in 1973 and Beatrice Foods purchased the company in 1976.
A small group of investors purchased the chain from Beatrice in 1982.
Krispy Kreme rapidly expanded its operation, opening its first outlet in New York in 1996, California (1999), and Toronto (2001).
Krispy Kreme also sells doughnuts through grocery stores.
In 2005, they were the largest selling doughnut in this category.
