Justin Bieber sang some of his biggest singles in front of a sold-out audience in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on the Red Sea.
Hailey Baldwin Bieber, Bieber's model wife, uploaded a supporting video of him on stage with the caption "Go Baby" on Instagram. Other videos on social media showed Bieber on stage solo, wearing a coordinated red outfit. Pop and R&B singer Jason Derulo performed before Bieber with backup female dancers in sweatpants and baggy tops.
Bieber was the most well-known performance at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, which saw Lewis Hamilton win the race before the season's final race.
This would have been impossible only a few years ago in Saudi Arabia, when ultraconservative traditions ruled. Concerts were outlawed, and single men and women were separated in public places. The massive reforms are the result of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's efforts to modernize society, attract international investment, and generate jobs for the youth.
The F1 race was the kingdom's first time hosting the world's most prestigious sports event, but it had previously held the lesser-known Formula-E race and other athletic events to improve the country's status as a tourist destination.
Bieber's performance in Saudi Arabia comes just a few months before he embarks on a world tour next year. Live Nation, the business that owns Ticketmaster, is promoting the tour. With a $1.4 billion interest in Live Nation, Saudi Arabia's state-owned sovereign wealth fund, led by Prince Mohammed, is one of the largest institutional investors.
