Sheikha Hussa Sabah al-Salem al-Sabah, Director-General of the Dar al-Athar al-Islamiyyah and co-owner of The al-Sabah Collection, has accepted an invitation to join the Board of Trustees of The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (MFAH). Her term will begin this autumn.
In asking Sheikha Hussa to join the board, Chairman Richard D. Kinder noted the long and positive relationship linking the museum and the Dar al-Athar al-Islamiyyah. He also mentioned her personal support, saying “we thank you for your exemplary support of the MFAH. Our success could not be possible without your unwavering dedication.”
While an informal relationship has existed between the two organisations and the individuals involved in each for decades, it was formalized in 2012 with the signing of a long-term loan agreement. Arts of Islamic Lands: Selections from The al-Sabah Collection, Kuwait opened 25 January 2013 in what are now known as the al-Sabah galleries. The loan continues, with objects being rotated in and out to ensure the exhibition remains inviting, as “[t]he al-Sabah galleries at the MFAH have been the focus of extensive programming as well as individual study, making Houston a new center for the display of art of the Islamic worlds,” said Museum Director Gary Tinterow.
In addition to being on the Board of Trustees of MFAH, Sheikha Hussa also serves on the Board of Trustees of the Metropolitan Museum of Art (NY), the Corporation Visiting Committee for the Department of Architecture at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the ALIPH Foundation Board. “Being part of these influential organisations gives me additional opportunities to share our history and culture and to promote Kuwait,” said Sheikha Hussa.
